Last season, Survivor cemented what the “new era” would look like. The first cycle since debuting its new structure and several new twists, the reality juggernaut kept things largely the same while swapping out quirky phrases for beads, ship wheels for sacks, and even creating new advantages. And it led to some eventful television, including one of the most brutal moves in the show’s history and the most surprising final outcome in recent memory.

The thing is, the 18 new contestants for Survivor 44 have not seen last season. They truly have no idea what may be similar or different from what they watched right before taking the flight to Fiji that will hopefully make them a million dollars richer. They come to the game from the Great White North in Canada all the way to the beaches of Puerto Rico. Their occupations range from drug counselor to an NYC firefighter to a barbershop owner. But the one thing they have in common: A hunger (before their literal hunger) to become the latest Sole Survivor and take home the million-dollar prize in what host and executive producer Jeff Probst has called “one of the most intense, unpredictable, inspirational, and most entertaining seasons.”
